NFIB jobs report showed small business owners have been hiring at a decent rate
during 2015
Washington, D.C., May 7, 2015 – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Chief Economist
William C. Dunkelberg issued the following comments
regarding the April
Jobs Report. The findings are based on the NFIB monthly Small Business
Economic Trends survey. The survey was conducted
in April and reflects the response of 1500 small businesses:
“The net percent of owners
increasing employment fell one percentage point, which is down substantially
from the December high,” Dunkelberg said. “But those who hired were more
aggressive this month providing an increase in workers per firm. The
string of steady hiring reports continues for the first few months of
2015.”
Twenty-seven
percent of all owners reported job openings they could not fill in the current
period, up three points from March. A
net 11 percent of owners plan to create new jobs in the coming months, which is
up one point. Fifty-three percent of
owners reported hiring or trying to hire, but forty-four percent of them
reported few or no qualified applicants for the positions they were trying to
fill.
“March job creation reports seemed off the mark and were
inconsistent with NFIB’s survey,” Dunkelberg continued. “April’s numbers do not
anticipate unemployment worsening – perhaps there will be a decline in the
unemployment rate.”
