Homeowners Insurance Bill Includes Much-Needed Lawsuit Abuse Reforms

State Executive Director Bill Herrle released the following statement today in response to Gov. Ron DeSantis’s decision to sign Senate Bill 2D, homeowners insurance reform legislation:

“This was an important bill for Florida’s small businesses. Senate Bill 2D includes three provisions our members have sought for many years: It eliminates one-way attorney fees, policy-busting bad faith claims, and attorneys’ fee multipliers that can double or triple the attorneys’ fee awards in insurance cases.

“Homeowners insurance rate increases only ratchet up the financial pressure on small business owners during these inflationary times. The pandemic has steered many entrepreneurs toward home-based businesses, and soaring insurance rates can cause additional pressure on wage inflation and the ability to retain talented workers.

“These essential reforms could not have happened without Governor DeSantis’ strong leadership.”
