NFIB supports SB 117 to safeguard small businesses from frivolous litigation

Show-Me State Takes On Lawsuit Reform

Willing and able workers are in short supply, while prices continue to skyrocket. This uncertainty can devastate a small business. But for mom-and-pop shops in Missouri, that uncertainty is exacerbated by the Show-Me state’s legal climate.

Under current law, a plaintiff can wait five years before filing a lawsuit. Not only is that an excessive amount of time, but inconsistent with the legal climate in neighboring states.

The General Assembly is considering legislation (SB 117) that would shorten that time frame from five years to two years. This reform would give small businesses greater certainty by reducing the risk of frivolous litigation. As the General Assembly continues its deliberation, NFIB will work with the legislature to get SB 117 to the Governor’s desk.
