Small Businesses Applaud Senate’s Passage of Bill to Promote Greater Transparency in Kansas’ Legal Landscape

February 21, 2025

“Senate Bill 54 will ensure greater transparency in Kansas’ legal landscape by requiring the disclosure of third parties with a financial interest in litigation.”

TOPEKA (Feb. 21, 2025) – Kansas’ leading advocate for small business, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) applauded the Senate for passing Senate Bill 54, which will help shine a light on third-party litigation financing. In a statement, State Director Dan Murray highlighted the bill as a top priority for small and family-owned businesses in the Sunflower State.

“Unlike their big box competitors, our small business owners do not have an army of attorneys at their disposal to fight every lawsuit that may come their way. Unfortunately, trial attorneys looking for a quick payout know this, and Main Street becomes an easy target for predatory litigation. The vast majority of our members here in Kansas want this issue addressed. Senate Bill 54 will ensure greater transparency in Kansas’ legal landscape by requiring the disclosure of third parties with a financial interest in litigation. We thank the Senate for standing up for a fairer, more transparent legal landscape here in Kansas, and urge the House to do the same.”

Background:

According to NFIB’s annual survey, 86% of Kansas members who participated in the survey believe Kansas should require the disclosure of third parties with a financial interest in litigation.
