(AUSTIN, TX) Feb. 16, 2017 — National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB)/Texas, the state’s leading small business association, presented the NFIB Guardian of Small Business and Ken Legler Small Business Champion awards at the seventh biennial Texas Small Business Day at the Capitol event, that featured speeches from a number of state leaders including Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush.
The NFIB Guardian of Small Business award is the association’s highest honor given to lawmakers whose work reflects support and advocacy for the small business community during the previous legislative session. Selected lawmakers have consistently voted with small business, earning a 100% voting record with NFIB during the 84th Legislative Session ranging on issues related to the state’s onerous franchise tax, to curtailing over-burdensome government regulations on employers.
“These distinguished lawmakers understand the true backbone of Texas’ economy, small business owners, and the impact public policy changes have on small business,” said NFIB Executive Director Will Newton. “As exceptional guardians of small business, these lawmakers ensure that the more than four million workers employed by small businesses in Texas, stay employed.”
There were 75 NFIB Guardian of Small Business awards acknowledged at the opening reception for the Small Business Day at the Capitol event. Below is a full list of Texas Senators and House Representatives honored for their work that protected small business. Additionally, the Ken Legler Small Business Champion Award was given to Sherry McKean of Indian Ink Leasing in Amarillo, Texas. She has been an active member since 2006 and has been an energetic voice at the Capitol for small business in Texas.
NFIB/Texas has 21,000 dues-paying members representing a cross-section of the state’s economy from agriculture, construction, and manufacturing to wholesale, retail, and services. Additionally, NFIB/Texas membership is 96 percent comprised of businesses who have 40 employees or less and is the largest association advocating for small business in the Capitol.
