State Director Jim Brown discusses NFIB's progress on small biz issues like minimum wage and paid leave mandates.
Dear NFIB/Tennessee Members,
The Tennessee General Assembly adjourned in late April after a whirlwind of activity, including meeting a constitutional requirement to balance the state budget.
NFIB advocated on many of the labor, tax and regulatory bills that could have had an impact on your business. We are pleased to report great success in keeping government off your back and out of your back pocket, with a full recap at www.nfib.com/tennessee/. In particular, NFIB helped to defeat a progressive labor agenda that would have established:
– A state minimum wage
– Various paid leave mandates and a state paid leave study
– The misnamed “Pay Equality Act”
– An effort to “ban the box” on employee applications
NFIB also successfully advocated for a new state protection for franchisees, countering the National Labor Relations Board’s ongoing effort to define franchisees as “joint employers,” which would lead to unwelcome unionization attempts in these businesses.

Jim Brown
