NFIB Urges Shoppers to Support Local Businesses During Tax-Free Weekend

NFIB State Director Rosemary Elebash today encouraged shoppers to support local, independent businesses during the upcoming sales-tax holiday. The back-to-school tax holiday is July 19-21 and applies to computers, clothing, school supplies, and books below a certain price. “Small business is the cornerstone of our economy,” Elebash said. “Chain stores and websites might offer some great deals, but local businesses provide unique and personal shopping experiences. Small businesses also offer unique products and better service because the owners are passionate about what they do. “When you shop locally, you help your neighbors keep their jobs, support local growth, and ensure that the money you spend stays in the community.” This year’s tax-free weekend comes as small businesses and shoppers alike are contending with rising prices. The just-released NFIB Small Business Optimism Index shows rising prices remain the No. 1 challenge for Main Street businesses. “These are tough economic times for everyone,” Elebash said. “Supporting local businesses is a simple way we can keep our communities strong.”
