Ban-the-box laws generally prohibit employers from inquiring about a criminal record on a job application, forcing them to wait until later in the hiring process to ask about criminal history. In the last two years, ban-the-box laws applicable to private-sector employers were passed in Illinois, New Jersey, Oregon, New York City, San Francisco and the District of Columbia.
