Lawsuit Abuse Legislation Moves Forward

Date: February 28, 2018

Legislation that will reduce litigation costs for small business update, update civil court procedures, and eliminate abusive civil lawsuit discovery procedures has been approved by the Assembly.

The bill passed the Assembly on a voice vote.

According to the Federal Tort Policy working group, two-thirds of every dollar paid out through the tort system is lost to attorneys’ fees and litigation expenses.

Governor Scott Walker has identified lawsuit reform as a key policy initiative of his small business agenda for Wisconsin because litigation costs, whether transactional or damage awards, can destroy a small business.

Assembly Bill 773 has the strong support of NFIB, and members are encouraged to contact their State Senators to urge support for passage of Assembly Bill 773.
