At a recent Memphis Area Action Council meeting, State Sen. Dolores Gresham (Somerville) shared education improvements are helping Tennessee become more “workforce ready,” but that much work remains.
Chairman of the Senate Education Committee and a longtime NFIB member, Gresham said Tennessee has moved from No. 46 in education ranking to No. 38. One of the busiest committees on the Hill, she said she expects more efforts to look at significant reforms next year, including the ongoing review of student assessment and testing.
Gresham said she and other state leaders remain very concerned with federal overreach, in particular the EPA’s Waters of the U.S. rule that has triggered widespread legal action. She commended Tennessee for suing the federal government and standing up for its 10th Amendment rights.
NFIB has filed a separate lawsuit challenging the rule.
Gresham, who serves on the Commerce & Labor, and Energy, Natural Resources & Agriculture committees, has been a consistently loyal supporter of small business, said Jim Brown, state director of NFIB/Tennessee.
