Post-Primary Nevada Election Notes

Date: June 18, 2024

From NFIB Nevada State Director Tray Abney

Following Nevada’s June 11 Primary Election, State Director Tray Abney made these notes for consideration by the NFIB Nevada PAC and the NFIB Fed PAC.

  • Turnout was an abysmal 19%, with a decrease of almost 20% from the last two cycles.
  • 65% of voters mailed their ballots (74 % of Ds and 50% of Rs). The Nevada Independent has a good recap.

Congressionally

  • Sam Brown (R) handily beat his opponents in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate and will face incumbent Jacky Rosen (D) in the fall.
  • The biggest surprise was that Drew Johnson (R) won the Republican primary for Congressional District 3 and will take on incumbent Suzie Lee (D) in the fall. Johnson beat out Lombardo-endorsed Marty O’Donnell and former State Treasurer Dan Schwartz, both of whom had heavily funded their own efforts.
  • In Congressional District 1, incumbent Dina Titus (D) is favored in her rematch with Mark Robertson (R).
  • In Congressional District 2, incumbent Mark Amodei (R) faces only non-partisan opposition and is a safe bet for re-election.
  • Former North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee (R) will take on incumbent Stephen Horsford (D) in Congressional District 4.

Legislatively

  • Gov. Joe Lombardo’s endorsed state legislative candidates advanced from the Primary.
  • Open Senate District 15 (Reno) is critical for Democrats to gain a 2/3 majority in the State Senate. Assemblywoman Angie Taylor beat Reno City Councilwoman Naomi Duerr in the Democratic primary and will take on Michael Ginsburg in the General Election. This D+6 district is prime to shift and will be the race to watch.
