DES MOINES, Iowa, Sept. 6, 2022—The political action committee for Iowa’s leading small-business association today announced it’s taken the extraordinary step of endorsing for state treasurer for the first time.

“The times necessitate getting small businesses involved in the race for state treasurer. This office has been underutilized for four decades in overseeing government spending and distributing funds reserved for small business,” said Matt Everson, Iowa state director for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), speaking for NFIB IA PAC, which made the endorsement of Roby Smith.

“The current treasurer of Iowa has been in office for almost 40 years. A change is needed. The long-term importance of the treasurer of Iowa will become even more prominent as government spending and lower taxes remains a top priority for our small business members here in the state.”

In addition to being Iowa’s chief financial officer for the state of Iowa, overseeing how the public’s money is spent and invested, a second significant duty is maintaining and distributing funds from the Linked Investments for Tomorrow Fund (LIFT), which is a U.S. Small Business Administration-style system that allocates and distributes funds to financial institutions in the state for small businesses to use for starting or expanding enterprises.

“The responsibilities of the job have grown and the pace of keeping up with them have quickened,” said Everson. “We believe Roby Smith, a banking and small-business expert, is the right candidate at the right time. He’s also been a proven friend of small businesses during his time in the Legislature.”

Added Roby Smith, “I believe small businesses play a major role in our state’s economy. I have always stood up for small businesses in Iowa and am honored to have the support of small businesses’ full-time advocates in our state, NFIB.”
