New poll shows 93% of Americans believe Congress should make the Small Business Deduction a top priority
What it means: NFIB released new polling and state-specific reports supporting the push to make the 20% Small Business Tax Deduction permanent and stop the massive tax hike on small businesses at the end of this year.
Our take: “Small businesses don’t just create jobs—they create opportunity, innovation, and strong local economies. If Congress allows the 20% Small Business Deduction to expire, a massive tax hike on small businesses will take effect, stifling growth, putting the brakes on hiring, and endangering countless small businesses,” said NFIB President Brad Close.
Take Action: Urge Congress to stop the massive tax hike on nine out of 10 small businesses and make the 20% Small Business Tax Deduction permanent.
According to a new poll released by NFIB’s Research Center, there is broad, bipartisan support for America’s small businesses along with overwhelming support for keeping the 20% Small Business Tax Deduction in the tax code. On Tax Day, NFIB released new state-specific reports outlining the benefits the 20% Small Business Tax Deduction will bring to every state in the country if it is made permanent. The reports also spotlight the massive tax increases small businesses in each state will face if the deduction is not made permanent.
According to the survey, more than 8 in 10 Americans feel it is important for the federal government to support small businesses, including strong majorities of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. That support translates to strong agreement (93%) that making the Small Business Deduction permanent should be a top priority for Congress, with nearly all Americans (95%) expressing some concern about the impact an expiration of the deduction would have.
The findings confirm what you already know: that allowing the 20% Small Business Tax Deduction to expire would have devastating consequences for small businesses and communities across America. To demonstrate the impact on a state-level, the reports NFIB released on Tax Day include:
- The number of small businesses that would be hit with higher taxes if the deduction is not made permanent
- The projected increase in state jobs and economic growth if the deduction is made permanent
- The anticipated impact of the 20% Small Business Deduction on the U.S. economy, including GDP growth and job creation, if it is made permanent.
Congress can’t wait until the last second to avoid a massive tax hike on small businesses. They have already given permanent tax relief to big companies. They must do the same for America’s 30 million small businesses.
